Opp Weekly News, March 1936 Oldest Married Couple enjoys 68th Anniversary Mr. and Mrs. Levi Roberts, thought to be the oldest married couple in Alabama, quietly enjoyed their 68th wedding anniversary on March 7 in their home. Bad weather prevented a small dinner celebration they had planned, and few people in Opp knew of their blessed event. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts moved to Opp 33 years ago from Estothel, where the old Roberts homestead was located. Their marriage occurred just after the Civil War in 1867. Mr. Roberts ia now 91 and his wife is 86.They still occupy their home on South Railroad Avenue. Mrs. Roberts does her own work; Mr. Roberts works around the home. They have no cook nor help, and today are actively engaged in following the happiness of simple home life. Their health id remarkably good. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts are of Primitive Baptist faith. They abide by the teachings of the Bible and are firm followers of the Golden Rule. Their long and peaceful companionship is attributed to the simple home life they have lived and to always working. Mr. and Mrs. Levi Roberts have enjoyed 68 years of happiness in wedlock. May they have the pleasure of more anniversaries with good health , just as they have had this year.
