Hudgens (Nancy Frances Carter Hudgens) Nancy Frances Carter was born in September 14, 1856, in Pike County, near what is now Henderson, and died September 28, 1928, at her home in Opp, Ala. Frances, as she was loving called members of her family, was the second child of Mr. and Mrs. T.G. Carter. Her girlhood days were spent happily on the old country homestead of her parents. It was here that she began practicing those qualities of kindness, unselfishness and thoughtfulness of others that characterized her whole life. As a girl she was loved and often shown preference by her young friends as well as by her elders. She did no talk much but when she did speck her voice, which was sweet and mellow, carried such conviction that all who heard listened to what she had to say. In her early teens she joined the Methodist Church to which she was as devoted and faithful as conditions and her health would permit. Hardly able to walk, she went to church the day before she took to her bed from which she never arose. As she walked out of the church she is said to have told her pastor, " I was not able to come today but I did want to hear one more sermon." Amid the profusion of Spring flowers and to a wedding march sung by the birds on this beautiful April day, Nancy Frances marched to the alter and was married to John J. Hudgens April the 6, 1884. Her wedding vows she never broke but faithfully and lovingly kept for more than forty-four years. By her husband's side she walked, sharing his troubles, trials and cares until her body was worn out and refused longer to serve. None will miss her as does he. Eight beautiful and bright children came to brighten and cheer this home, all of whom are living. To each of these children she was always a most prefect mother. But she is no more here, she has gone from us. Children, and husband, your home has lost so much in her going that the world holds nothing good enough to give you compensation for your loss. You will have to go home in heaven to recover your treasure. We all shall go by and by, God wants all his children at home. No devoted mother ever welcome more gladly home one of her absent children than our heavenly Father welcomes this child of his last Friday. He let her stay with us until he could not spare her longer. " Precious in the sight of the Lord is the death of his saints"-precious as is the homecoming of our children. Where he is, there he wants his children also. Blessed Lord, thou art welcome to her, though " We long to have back what we would not take." Keep her and us against all ills and let us come home as soon as is best. Our friends, companion and mother has gone before us and we are left alone with thee. "Away with our sorrows and fears! We soon shall recover over home; The City of saints appear; The day of eternity come. From earth we shall quickly remove, And mount to our native abode, The house of our Father above, The palace of angels and God. From one who knew and loved her....
