This file was contributed and copyrighted by: Rebecca Roberts Nagle < rlnagle@comcast.net > ================================================================================= May 2003 Oldest Union In State Broken By Death Opp Weekly News Thursday, May 21, 1936 The oldest union in the state was broken Thursday, May 14, when Mr. Levi Roberts, age 91 years died unexpectedly and the family residence on Railroad Avenue after an illness of only a few days. Mr. Roberts, familiarly known to his many friends as, “Uncle Levi” was born and reared in Alabama his family having moved here from Georgia in the pioneer days. He was a veteran of the Civil War in which he was wounded by the Yankees. His was a very unassuming, quiet disposition but it always gave Mr. Roberts much pleasure to relate to the present generation the happenings of the war and how he moved to Opp when the town was first beginning with its present site merely a pine thicket. He was married to Miss Amanda Henderson, March 7, 1867. They have held the record of being the oldest married couple in the state for some time and this fact has never been disputed. Mr. Roberts was a devout member of the Primitive Baptist Church and attributed his long life to having lived according to the teachings of the Golden Rule, as he stated to a reporter of the News when interviewed at his home on his sixth-ninth wedding anniversary last March. Funeral services were conducted at the residence Friday afternoon at one o’clock with Elder J.A.J. Mitchell officiating assisted by Rev. G.H. Shear. Burial was at Eight Mile Church near Hacoda, where the Roberts resided when first married. Active pall bearers were: T.T. Clark, J.J. Pitts, C.W. Wilson, W.L. Woodall, Cliff T. Gallops and W.O. Austin. Honorary pallbearers were R.K. Rainer, J.F. Williams, J.R. Adams, A.P. Stanley, I.S. Wright, John Cuthrell, G.C. Wright, T.N. Woodham, J.W. Powell, C. Byrd, J.C. McNeal, M.J. Adams, G.C. Pierce, C.W. Simmons, A.R. Woodham, W.H. Jackson and J.B. Snell. Surving the deceased are his wife, Mrs. Amanda Roberts, three sons, Edward, Grey and Daniel Roberts of Opp; two daughters, Mrs. Henry Parker, Leona, Fla., and Mrs. Beulah Carter of Columbus.
