Martha and Mary Kelly to Jesse Desmukes [Dismukes]

State of Alabama
Crenshaw County

Know all men by these presents, that we Martha Kelly and Mary Kelly, for and in 
consideration of the sum of 2000 two hundred dollars to us paid in hand by 
Jesse Desmukes [Dismukes], the receipt whereof we do hereby acknowledge and do 
hereby grant, bargain, and sell to the said Jesse Desmukes,  his heirs assigns 
the following tract of land to wit  SW 1/4 of the SW 1/4 Sec 6, T 10, Range 17 
containing forty acres more or less together with all the implements whereto 
belonging, situation in Crenshaw County State of Alabama of which we are seized 
in fee [simple] whereof  we warrant against the claims of all other persons.  
Given under my hand and seal this [looks like “December”] 1868.

Martha and Mary Kelly to Jesse Desmukes [Dismukes]


The Grantors/Sellers - Martha Kelly and Mary Kelly - were surely the Martha and 
Mary who were daughters of Seaborn Kelly/Kelley, who attested to these 
signatures.  The two had lived with their mother Winnie Kelly in 1860.  Winnie 
may have died by 1868, the year of this deed and the year Martha married James 
Wesley Massey and Mary moved in with them.  That would explain the land sale at 
that time. The land they sold is near Honoraville, not far from where Seaborn’s 
father Tyre Kelley had land prior to his death.
