John Finlay West, 43 of Glenwood, Ala., died of injuries suffered when he was run over by a tractor. He was bush-hogging alone in a field owned by Brickins Corkins at Fleetwood. It was reported that the tractor West drove had a bad starter, so that he would start it by using a screwdriver to cross the wires … and that he may have been standing in front of it doing this when the engine started. The tractor proceeded several hundred feet from West after he was knocked down and a back tire ran over his chest. West was able to drag himself to the side of County Road 3, not far from where he had been working, and flag down passerby Richard Parsons of Glenwood as he was driving in his car. Parsons and passenger Cary Hughes of Glenwood helped West into the car and drove him to Crenshaw County Hospital in Luverne. The injured West exchanged words with them en route to Luverne but had expired by time of arrival at the hospital. Another young farmer – Herman Sanders in his 40’s, also – died August 6 less than a mile away from this accident site. He was electrocuted while welding a combine.
