BARNES 01/15/1877-04/25/1960 John A. Barnes, 83, 2501 First Ave. died at 8:20 a.m. on Monday at The Medical Center after an illness of 1 week. Mr. Barnes was a retired grocer & had lived in Columbus, Ga. 39 years. He came to Columbus from Montgomery, Ala. born in CRENSHAW County, Ala. on January 15, 1877, son of the late Joseph and Caroline Jackson Barnes. He was the widower of Fannie Hall Barnes from Covington Co. Al. Surviving him are 2 sons, J.C. Barnes, Montgomery, AL, J.P. Barnes, Columbus, Ga. Five Daughters, Mrs. W.M. King, Mrs. S.C. Pitts Sr., both of Columbus, Mrs. Jospeh Spewack and Mrs. John Scuffert, both of Montgomery; and Mrs. C.E. Hoyt, Los Angeles Calif; Two brothers, Joe Barnes of Sulear, Fla.; and Will Barnes of Tampa Fla; And one sister, Mrs. Cannie Brunson, Andalusia, Ala; 24 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren. Additional Comments: No place of Burial is indicated in the obituary. He was possibly taken back to AL. for burial since all the other Muscogee Co. burials for the following week had been placed in the newspaper by the Funeral Homes. John Barnes married Fannie Hall in Covington County, AL. They appear on the Muscogee Co. 1930 Census together. John had Brothers, William, Joseph E., Leonard, Sisters Emma Louisa Barnes Carpenter, Martha Barnes Sellers, Cannie Barnes Brunson & Carrie Lee Barnes who died in 1902 in Crenshaw County.
