The deceased was one of the old landmarks in this section, having lived within three miles of the town for more than 65 years. He was a justice of the peace for nearly an half century, except for two years, when he served as superintendent of education for this county. He served in the Indian and Mexican wars. He was a consistent member of the Methodist church. He leaves five sons and four daughters to mourn his demise. On Friday evening he was buried, in Emmaus cemetery, with Masonic rites. The Journal extends its sympathy to the family." (1) (1) The Luverne Journal, Thursday, 18 Nov 1897, p. 2. Microfilm: Located in the Alabama Archives and History, Montgomery, AL.
