Staples, husband of Angeline F. (nee Johnson) Staples (First Document) Application for the relief by Soldiers maimed or disabled during the Late War, under Act approved February 25, 1887. The State of Alabama County of Cullman. Personally appeared before me, A. B. Hays, Judge of Probate in and for said County, William J. Staples, who being duly sworn, deposeth and saith that when a Sergeant in Company “F” of 61st Regiment of Ala. Infy. he was wounded by being shot in the right thigh, while in the discharge of his duty, on the 18th day of July 1864, at Snicker’s Gap, in the State of Virginia and in consequence of which wound or wounds he has been rendered physically incapable of making a livelihood by labor; that he was a resident of Alabama on the 25th day of February, 1887, and is a resident at the date of this application; that he is engaged in the business of farming; and that his taxable property does not exceed one thousand dollars in value. (Second Document) Physically Incapable of Making a Livelihood by Labor Application for relief by soldiers maimed or disabled during the Late War, under Act approved February 28, 1889. The State of Alabama County of Cullman Personally appeared before me, A. B. Hays, Judge of Probate in and for said County, William J. Staples, who, being duly sworn, deposeth and saith that when an Orderly Sergeant of Company F of 61st Regiment of Alabama Infantry and while in the discharge of his duty on the (left blank) day of July 1864, at Snicker’s Gap in the State of Virginia, he was wounded by being wounded by a musket ball in the right leg about 4 inches above the knee, shattering the bone and in consequence of which wound or wounds he has been rendered physically incapable of making a livelihood by labor; that he was a resident of Alabama on the 28th day of February, 1889, and is a resident at the date of this application; that he is engaged in the business of peddling; and that his taxable property does not exceed four hundred dollars in value. We the undersigned members of the Pension Board of Examiners for the County of Cullman hereby certify that we have examined the within application by law directed and we find that said application should be granted, and the applicant placed in class 4. Finding of State Board of Examiners We, the undersigned State Board of Examiners, hereby certify that we have examined the within application and recommend that said application be granted, and that the applicant be placed in class 4 under the act of Feb. 10th, 1899. State of Alabama, County of Cullman To the Honorable Board of Examiners of said County: Your petitioner, Angeline F. Staples, respectfully represents to your Honorable Board, that she is a citizen of Cullman County, in the State of Alabama, and was such on the 1st day of January 1899; that she is a widow of W. J. Staples, who served as a first Sergt in company F of the 61st Regiment Ala. Volunteers; That her husband was wounded Snickers Gap, Va. 1864 (& died on the 29 day of Dec. 1890); That he did not desert the service of the State of Alabama, nor of the Confederate States, that she has not since remarried, that she has no children upon whom she can depend for support, that all of her property do not exceed four hundred dollars. She therefore respectfully asks your honorable board to place her name upon the pension rolls of the State as a member of the fourth class, that she may participate in the division of the fund provided for the relief of needy Confederate soldiers and sailors, and their widows, by an act of the General Assembly of Alabama, approved February 10, 1899. July 1st 1899 I, Geo. W. Watts, medical examiner of the board of examiners for said county hereby certify that I was well acquainted with W. J.
