Rev. Calvert Shows Land Deeds Dated As Far Back As 1839 Land Lay In Walker, Then in Hancock, Then Cullman Counties Rev. Sim Calvert exhibited six land deeds, of historic interest Tuesday, dating as far back as 1839. The Lands are situated in the southwest part of Cullman County, but when first obtained by government deeds, the tracts lay in Walker County. Later this territory became a part of Handcock County, and finally, Cullman County. The U. S. Land Office, Huntsville issued a deed to Armistead Blevins, for the SW 1/4 of Sec. 7, Tp. 12, R. 5W., for 40 and 52-100 acres on Rock Creek, in 1839, Martin Van Buren's name as President, being signed to the deed. This land was then in Walker County. In 1850 James Blevins, Armistead's son received a deed to 40 and 52-100 acres of adjoining land dated April 1850, signed by President Zachary Taylor. James was later killed in the Civil War. John Calvert (kinsman of the Calverts now, of the Calverts now residing in the western part of this county.) Received a deed for 80 acres in "Hancock" County, (the latter created from Walker, Winston, and Blount Counties) for adjoining lands to to the Blevins, dated March, 1858, signed by President James Buchanan. James Blevins also received a deed in 1858 for an adjacent tract in March 1858, signed by President Buchanan. Jno. R. Campbell received a deed to 80 acres in the same Township dated 1871, signed by President Chester A. Arthur. Finally James Hilton, administrator of the estate of James Blevins who had acquired nearly all of the aforementioned tracts sold the land in June 1876 to John R. Campbell. A. B. Hays, Cullman County's second Probate Judge signed the deed. Campbell's discharge from the Confederate Army in July, 1865 was shown by Rev. Calvert: Campbell's descendants now own nearly all of the land mentioned. The deed signed by James Blevins was notarized by J. B. Nesmith. Justice of the Peace dated November 1858. The latter is a great, great grandfather of Rev. Sim Calvert and of Mayor of W. J. Nesmith of Cullman. The old deeds were all in a perfect state of preservation, and are valuable, as forming a link in the history of what is now Cullman County. Additional Comments: Genealogical Notes: John R. Campbell was married to 1st wife was Jane Catherine Blevins after her death he married her younger sister, Rachel. Daughters of James Blevins and Rachel Nesmith. I have posted John R. Campbell Civil War records on Walker County. John R. Campbell served in the Union Army. http://www.usgwarchives.net/al/walker/military.htm File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/cullman/newspapers/landdeed807gnw.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/alfiles/ File size: 3.3 Kb
