This file was contributed and copyrighted by: Robert Wedding ================================================================================= February 1999 Obit of Max Schmitt - Cullman Co., AL Max Schmitt Obituary Cullman Tribune - 28 Aug. 1919 Prominent Citizen Died Suddenly Sunday Morning Mr. Max Schmitt Stricken With Heart Failure and Passes Away - His Death a Great Surprise The sudden and unexpected death of Mr. Max Schmitt in this city Sunday morning shortly after 11 o'clock was not only a shock to his family but the entire citizenship for on Saturday he had been actively engaged in looking after his business interests as was his daily custom, attending to not only the duties of the bakery but also his saw mill and lumber business and on Sunday arose and after looking after affairs at home came down to the bakery and built the fire in the furnace and was assisting Mrs. Schmitt in the cafe when he told her that he would go up stairs and lay down for a little rest as he felt tired or was not feeling good. As Mr. Schmitt often after his morning's work went up and took a short rest, Mrs. Schmitt supposed that after a short rest he would be himself again, but just after 11 o'clock his good wife decided to go up to see about him and to her shock found that he had answered the supreme call of the Master. Dr. Armstrong was called and on his arrival he found that the breath of life was gone. Mr. Schmitt was born February 9th, 1860 in Alsace-Lorraine, France and at the age of six years came to the United States with his parents, who when Mr. Schmitt was 14 years old moved to Cullman where he had since resided. No citizen of Cullman was any better or more favorably known than he for since his early manhood had been an active and progressive citizen, had served the county as a member of the board of county commissioners and the city as a councilman a number of years. He was a man of strong convictions yet conservative in his views. As a businessman, he had prospered. Mr. Schmitt had been married twice, his first wife died several years ago, and on September 5th, 1892 he was married to Miss Josephine Wendling. Mr. Schmitt is survived by his widow and the following children: Miss Marie, Sister Eugenia, O.S.B. of Birmingham, Mrs. E. E. Wedding of Florence, Alphonse, Eugene, Misses Anna and Frances, Mrs. C. M. Richard and Mr. Emil Schmitt. The two latter being daughter and son of Mr. Schmitt's first wife. The funeral services were conducted on Tuesday morning from Sacred Heart Catholic church of which he was a prominent and influential member and interment followed in the Catholic cemetery.
