He was the son of James Grimes and Sarah Winders. Setphen married Bethany Hines, the daughter of Joel Hines and Patience Gulley of Lenoir County, North Carolina. Bethany was born about 1802 and died about 1860 in Dale County, Alabama Stephen and Bethany sold land in Klondike, AL in 1835 and moved to Stewart County, GA where Stephen's brothers lived. In 1838 they sold land in Stewart County and moved back to Dale County along with his surviving brothers. Stephen and Bethany became lifelong Dale County residents raising their family there. Brother John Grimes died in 1837 in Stewart County, GA. His widow, Catherine Frederick Grimes, moved to Coffee County, Alabama with her children - many descendants still live there. He married Harriett Calloway Hildreth, born June 17, 1825, died February 21, 1883, in Brandon, Texas. She was the daughter of Rev. Benjamin J. Hildreth and Jemima Dowling. Some say that Matilda Grimes, who married a Summerlin, was a daughter of Stephen and Bethany. There were Summerlins were in Dale County. But Matilda was born in 1817. What throws me off on that line is that people send information on her, and they have been doing this much longer than I, so it is most likely she was a dauughter of Stephen and Bethany.
