Dale County AlArchives History .....Some Old Settlers of Dale Co., Al. by W.E. Preston nee Mathes ************************************************ Copyright. All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/al/alfiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Christine Thacker http://www.genrecords.net/emailregistry/vols/00033.html#0008100 July 5, 2004, 8:57 am Also contributing were Margie Lawrence and Kathy Faul Information in brackets [ ] added. Old Settlers Some of the OLD SETTLERS and the names of their SONS who lived in or near the junction of the East and West Choctawhatchee Rivers of Dale County, Alabama prior to 1860, by William E. Preston nee Mathews. This index compiled from a copy of the original record in possession of Mr. James E. Preston, 163 Broad St., Ozark, Alabama. On 26 July 1949. In other words on that date I ( Eustus Howard Hayes) made a copy of the original which has been rated highly among my Genealogical Collection. Recently I have had several occasions to refer to Mr. Mathews work and found the volume needed indexing to save valuable time. In several instances, Mr. Mathews didn't seem to punctuate clearly, thus two single names might appear as a double name, or a double name could actually be two names. Example: Name, Wm. Seborn Gray, as appears under Seborn Ledbetter, the remainder of the children have single names like Batson, Simon and James. Under some name I have added my own remarks to clarify the record as much as possible. These remarks are accompanied by my initial EHH to distinguish my remarks from Mr. Mathews. This Index was compiled by Eustus Howard Hayes, March 28, 1956. Explanation: This index shows name of Father, where he came from, the year he came to Dale County and the names of his sons.
