September 1919 My name is Samuel Eason Stephens, my post office address is Skipperville, Alabama. I am 74 years, 1 month, and 10 days old. I have lived in this state For 61 years. He states that he was a soldier. I enlisted in Oct., 1863 at Tunnel Hill, Ga. (it says Ala., that is not correct) I was in the infantry, I was A private in Company B, Dr. H.J. Sessions was my captain in the 33rd. Alabama . He states that C.L. Andrews was his colonel. I saw actual service for about 2 years. I was never wounded. I was taken prisoner at the battle of Franklin, Tenn. I was captured there. I was sent to Camp Douglas, Ill. I was released as an 'exchange'. I was paroled in 1865a t Macon, Ga. at the close of the war. I was 'paroled'. I have never taken an oath of allegiance to any other government other than the Confederate States before 9 April 1865. He states that he never lived in any other state than Alabama- he states' No'- (that is not correct as he was born in Stewart Co., Ga.) The actual value of the property of yourself? He states $2473. I have no salary or income. I am married. I was married 8 July 1866. My wife is 70 years of age. My living children are: Thomas, age 52,lawyer-James, age 38, farmer-Robert, age 42, Laborer-Gus, age 33,farmer.( some of these ages are not correct and he had other children- could be there was not enough space on the application form to list them- see his widow's pension Application). My name was taken as a Confederate Soldier In the last census taken by this state. I do not belong to the 'Camp of Confederate Veterans'. I have never mad application for a pension in this state or any other state. I am a registered voter at Skipperville, Beat 11. I am living with my wife at this time. I have never been on the pension roll of this state. He makes his 'X' as his signature and a Thomas Jefferson Stephens witnesses it. Sworn and subscribed before me this 15th. Day of November 1919.
