One Thousand Eight Hundred and Fifty One personally appeared before me, a Justice of the Peace within and for the County and State aforesaid STEPHEN GRIMES aged Sixty Three years , a resident of Dale County in the State of Alabama who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical STEPHEN GRIMES who was a private in the Company commanded by Captain BRYANT GLISSON in the foot Regiment of ________ commanded by Col. DAVID MOORE in the War known as War of 1812&1813. That he was mustered into service at Ft. Johnson N Carolina on or about the first day of August A.D. 1812 for the term of Six Months and continued in actual service in said War for the term of Three Months and was honorably discharged at the same place, but was not finally discharged until about the 1st of August 1814-but received no written discharge ,the cause of which is unknown to affiant. (signed by) STEPHEN GRIMES He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Bounty Land to which he may be entitled, under the "Act granting Bounty Land to certain Officers and Soldiers who have been engaged in the Military service of the United States," passed September 28th 1850. Sworn to and subscribed before me the day and year above written, and i hereby certify, that i believe the said STEPHEN GRIMES to be the identical man who served as aforesaid, and that he is of the age above stated. (L.P) THE STATE OF ALABAMA,DALE COUNTY On this the 12th day of July A.D. 1852 appeared before me WILLIAM SCARNELL, a Justice of the Peace within and for the County and State of aforesaid, STEPHEN GRIMES, aged 64 years, a resident of Dale County, in the State of Alabama, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical STEPHEN GRIMES, who was a Private Soldier in the Company commanded by Captain BRYANT GLISSON in the Volunteer Regiment commanded by Colonel DAVID MOORE, of North Carolina Militia in the War with Great Britian, declared by the United States on the 18th June 1812, that he volunteered at Duplin County Court House, Kennansville, Duplin County , State Of North Carolina, on or about the 1st day of July A.D. 1812, for the term of six months, and continued in actual service in said war for the term of three months and 2or3 days, and was then dismissed at Fort Johnstone Smithfield, Brunswick County, North Carolina, on or about the last day of October A.D. 1812, until affiant received further orders to serve out the balance of the time, that he volunteered to serve, accordingly, on about the 26th day of July A.D. 1813, he was called into service again, in the same War, and under the same Officers above named, to serve out the six months if required, the Company above named ,met at Duplin County Courthouse, where affiant went into actual service a second time (agreeable to orders) on or about the 26th July, A.D. 1813, __continued in actual service about Six weeks, and was honorably discharged at-Fort Johnstone,Smithfield, Brunswick County, North Carolina, on or about the last day of August A.D. 1813, as will appear by the -muster rolls of said Company, Affiant never received a certificate of discharge, but was mustered out of service. He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the bounty land to which he may be entitled under the,"Act granting bounty land to Certain Officers and Soldiers who have been in the Military service of the United States" passed September 28th 1850. Affiant has received a Warrant for 40 Acres N49,879,__8th day of April 1852, on account of his services stated within, but considers under the Act(afore stated) that he may be entitled to more than the Warrant he has received, and he thinks there may have been an omission made in his first declaration, by mistake in some way; has never received land under any other Act of Congress, nor entitled that he knows of. signed by STEPHEN GRIMES Sworn to and subscribed before me the day & year within written. and i hereby certify, that i believe the said STEPHEN GRIMES to be the identical man who served as aforesaid, and that he is of the age within stated. From 25July to 21Oct 1812 From 31 July to 21 Aug 1813 ------------------------------------------------------------------- Newton, Dale County, Ala. March 17th. 1853.- To the Commissioners of Pensions, Sir, In the case of STEPHEN GRIMES, i am informed by letter from your office dated 21th February,last, that upon the return of land Warrant # 49,879 for 40 Acres issued to STEPHEN GRIMES, Private in Capt. BRYANT GLISSON'S Company, N.C., Militia, War of 1812, one for 80 Acres will issue in lieu thereof. In reply to the above STEPHEN GRIMES informs me that he located the Warrant # 49,879 for 40 Acres, issued to him,at Sparta,Ala. on the 15th day of July 1852 , and has a certificate from the land office to that effect, it is therefore out of his power to return any thing but the certificate for the land he has located, the Warrant above named I presume was returned from Sparta to the General land office by the date of location is above,if you can be satisfied of that fact, i should suppose that another Warrant could be issued. Your Obdt Servt Wm Scarnell Another letter was sent on 6th day of June 1853, just about the same as above , but the Justice of the Peace was EDWARD A. MILLIGAN. ----------------------------------------------------------------- STATE OF ALABAMA,Dale County. ss On this 7th day of April A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty five,, personally appeared before me M.G. MATTHEWS, a Justice of the Peace, within and for the County and State aforesaid (*my note Stephen was spelled wrong,looks like Safithen) GRIMES aged 68 years, a resident of Dale County in the State of Alabama who being duly sworn according to law, declares that he is the identical STEPHEN GRIMES who received under act of September,1850, a land (2) warrant (8) for 40 Acres each acres, No. Warrant # 91945 for services in Captain BRYANT GLISSON Company, 1 Regiment ,Commanded by DAVID MOORE, war of 1812 & 1813, which warrant is, Leagally disposed of and cannot now return. He makes this declaration for the purpose of obtaining the Bounty Land granted by the act passed 3rd March 1855, and he hereby declares that he has not applied for or received, and he is not entitled to Bounty land except as above stated, and he hereby appoint THOMAS BULLARD of Dale County,Alabama, his Attorney to prosecute his claim and receive his warrant when issued. Personally came, ELIJAH T. MATTHEWS and BURRELL BLACKMAN resident of Dale County,Alabama, persons whom i certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who being duly sworn say that they were present and saw STEPHEN GRIMES sign his name to the foregoing declaration, and they further swear that they have every reason to believe, from the appearance of the applicant, that he is the identical person he represents himself to be, and who has received 80 Acres of land for his services in the war 1812 &1813 and they,deponents, do reside in the County of Dale, State of Alabama. MATTHEWS, a Justice of Peace for Dale County, do hereby certify that STEPHEN GRIMES whose name is signed to the within declaration, (for land) and also E T MATTHEWS and BURELL BLACKMAN whose genuine signatures appear to the above affidavit as witnesses, did, on the day and date, make oath and subscribe their names before me. And our Court is a Court of record, having general jurisdiction. and i also certify that i have no interest in the result of the case, and am not concerned in its prosecution. M G MATTHEWS JP * I would like to add that in the 1850 Agricultural census STEPHEN GRIMES is listed as having 20 acres of improved land and 100 acres of unimproved land. I think the above dealing for the Bounty land became a matter of Principle and something that was due him from his service in the War of 1812. CGT 7/25/1999
