The citation follows: Distinguished Service Cross-for extraordinary bravery on the Solomon Islands the 21st of August, 1943. Private First Class Chambers, a member of a patrol, was on a mission contacting the enemy, feeling out his position, and determining his strength. When the patrol came within one hundred feet of a Japanese strong point the enemy immediately opened fire with rifle and machine guns. Durning the ensuing engagement Private First Class Chambers aggressively fired his automatic rifle with skill and telling effect. Suddenlly Private Chambers noticed a five-man enemy machine gun squad moving its weapon into a position on the patrol's right flank from which deadly fire could be placed on the members of the patrol. Abandoning his covered position Private Chambers moved into direct enemy fire and killed all five of the Japanese, thereby effectively sUbduing the threat to his patrol'S flank. In accomplishing this heroic action, Private First Class Chambers suffered wounds which subsequently caused his death. By his courageous action and outstanding devotion to duty he was instrumental not only in saving the lives of many of his comrades, but also In assuring the completion of his patrol's mission.
