LAMUEL L. WHITMAN KILLED IN ACTION Mrs. Lena P. Whitman was notified recently by the War Department of the death of her husband, Sgt. Lamue1 L. "Mack" Whitman, who died Sept. 17, of wounds received in action Sept. 13, In Yugoslavia. He was Inducted In the Army Air Corps April 22, 1943. He received his basic training at Keesler Field, Biloxi,. Miss. From there he was sent to Laredo, Texas where he received his diploma and silver wings. After graduation he was sent to Gowen Field, Boise, Idaho where he completed his advanced training as flight engineer. He was ordered overseas in Aug. The last letter received from him was dated Sept. 11. Mack would have been 25 years of age this Nov. 19. He is survived besides his wife, his mother, Mrs. Callie Whitman, Ozark rfd. two brothers, Orie Whitman, Ozark. rfd., James L., Mobile; one sister, Mrs. .J. T. Lewis, Tampa, Florida. ~~~~~~~~ PFC: LEWIE F. FREE WOUNDED IN ACTION Pfc. Lewie F. Free haS received the Purple Heart for back and hand injuries he received. in action On Nov. 11, 1944. Pfc. Free went into service Dec. 11. 1943. and went overseas In July 1944. He was assigned to the 90th Infantry Division. of Gen. Patton's 3rd Army and was In the encirclement of the fortress city of Metz. Pfc. Free writes that he is improving rapidly and praises the care our boys get in the hospitals in France. Pfc. Free also has a brother, CpI. Holman Free who has been in Italy for 11 months and Is in the Air Corps. ~~~~~~~ PVT. JAMES E. TOMLIN REPORTED_WOUNDED--- Mr. and Mrs. Eddie N. Tomlin of Ozark, have been notified by the Navy Department that their son, Pfc. James E. Tomlin, USMCR, has been wounded. No details were released by the Eighth Naval District in a dispatch to The star. ~~~~~~~ PFC. KARL ECKERT NOW, IN ENGLAND Mrs. Karl Eckert has received word her husband, Pfc. Karl Eckert has arrived safely in England. Mrs Eckert will be remembered as the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Strickland of Ozark. Pfc. Eckert was stationed in Camp Rucker for eight months. He is overseas for the second time. He was' first stationed In Panama Canal Zone for two years and seven months. Mrs. Eckert is making her home with his parents in Hammond, Indiana. She is working for the Illinois Bell Telephone & Telegraph Co. ~~~~~~ LOCAL GI MEMBER OUTFIT CITED FOR HEROIC ACTION ON MT.PANTANO IN ITALY WITH THE FIFTH ARMY IN ITALy-Private First Class Earl W. RICHARDS of Skipperville, Alabama was a member of the 1st Battalion of the 168th Regiment which recently received the Distinguished Unit Citation for seizing and holdIng important German positions on Mount Pantano, Italy, anchor of the German winter line in 1943, and opening the way for the Fifth Army driv e to thte Rapido River Valley. Richards whose home is on route 2. Skipperville, has since been hospitalized. (Abstracted CGT) ~~~~~~ LOCAL SOLDIER FIGHTS WITH HISTORIC TANK BATTALION IN ITALY WITH THE fiFTH ARMY IN ITALY- Pvt. Angus. L. Sherman, Son of Mr. James Sherman of route litter bearer, is a member of the historic 1st Tank Battalion, currently fighting as part of Lieut. General Mark W. Clark'S fifth Army in Northern Italy.
