(Reprinted Southern Star Sept. 23 2004 pg 4B) SKIPPERVILLE BOY ON LCI CREW SOLOMONS, Md., Sept. 18.-It is with pleasure that the Commanding, Officer of the U. S. Naval Amphibious Training Base, Solomons, Maryland announces the selection of LCI Crew 3748 of which J. M. Gardner, S/2c, a former resident in Dale County, is a member, as the outstanding crew in the group graduating 11 September 1944 at this Training Base. Notification of this selection was sent to the, man's next of kin. his father, Mr. Alto Lee Gardner, Route No. 2, Skipperville, Alabama. In choosing the outstanding crew in the group it was necessary to consider such points as the crew's militarY performance and bearing promptness at drills ashore and afloat, appearance, general attitude and interest and performance at schools. Gardner is to be commended for his contribution to the excellent performance of his crew. The training was rigorous and necessarilly condensed so that the Dunaway's competition was keen. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ S/SGT. WILTON DUNAWAY VISITING GRANDPARENTS S/Sgt, Wilton Dunaway, who left the States with the Ozark Tank Co. in December, 1941, and served in the Pacific with the Bn., is now back in the States, While on furlough visiting his, mother, Mrs. Anderson in Texas, he and his mother spent a few days here with Mrs. Anderson's parents and Sgt. Dunaway's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Oppert. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PAUL T. JONES AT HOME ON FURLOUGH Paul T. Jones, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Jones of Ozark route 4.,is at home on furlough. He joined the NavY three months ago on his 18th birthday and has just completed his boot training at camp Perry. Mr. and Mrs. Jones have another son, Pfc. Joe Jones who is at Fort Belvoir, Va., in an Engineer unit since Nov. 1943. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ RETURNS TO NEBRASKA Pfc. Roy Leatherwood left Tuesday for Lincoln, Nebr., where he has an Army assignment. He has been at home with his parents and family for the past two weeks. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ S/SGT. W. B. KINGSLEY HOME ON FURLOUGH S/Sgt. William B. Kingsley, stat1oned at Columbia, S. C., spent a few days at home with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. O. F. Kingsley. Sgt. Kingsley was accompanied back to Columbia by Mrs. Kingsley and baby, who have been spending sometime here with relatives. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ JAMES C. BROWN OF DALEVILLE WOUNDED The Eighth Naval District office in Mobile announced. yesterday that James Carroll Brown Seaman first class, USNR, nephew of Robert Franklin Griffin of Daleville, had been wounded. No other information was released. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ SGT. JAS. E. RICHARDSON AT HOME AFTER 28 MONTHS OVERSEA SERVICE Sgt. James E. Richardson, Ord. Air Force has returned from 28 months overseas in the American Theater of Operations. He arrived at Camp Shelby, Miss., and is now visiting his parents at Ariton. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ AT HOME ON FURLOUGH Ralph Bludsworth of, US Navy is visiting his father, W. A. Bludsworth and family on route one. Ralph is looking fine and is being warmly welcomed by his friends and loved ones. It has been two years since he was at home. His present assignment is at Jacksonville, Fla. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ PVT. LUTHER J. STEVEN AT HOME ON FURLOUGH Pvt. Luther J. Stevens, stationed, at Fort Winfield Scott, San Francisco, Calif., is at home with his family on furlough. Pvt. Stevens has been in the service for the past 21 months and this is his first visit home in a year. Pvt Stevens is the son of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Stevens of Midland CitY route one. Mr. and Mrs. Stevens have two other sons in the service, Glenn, D. Stevens is in North Africa and James C. Stevens is in New Guinea.
