Dowling, in Pensacola and the subsequent burial at Claybank Cemetery. The Article "How it strikes a Stranger" written by Traveler to the Southern Churchman ,of Richmond, Va.,brings to the mind of the senior editor a very sad remenescence of the late war. I think it was in September,1861 while Bragg's army was stationed at, and around the Navy Yard at pensacola the writer visited the marine hospital and when he got inside there on a couch lay a Young Soldier who was then passing through the last struggles of death, He had been a gallant and faithful Soldier not fearing any enemy or shirking any duty and was always at his post of duty till disease claimed him for its victim and was consigned to this hosptal by the surgeon of the regiment for treatment. Being our friend and Comrade we went in to see him, he was almost speechless and could only speak in a low whisper; he beckoned and when we held our ear near, he said in a wispher " I want to be sent home and buried at Claybank Church ". This was all he said and the last words he ever spoke, for before the sun set that evening Jas. K. Dowling of Capt. McCalls Co., 7th Ala. Vols was a Corpse, his request was carried out and he was sent home and buried at Claybank church, and this no doubt was the grave the young soldier referred to by Traveler ~The Dale County Standard.
