NEWS OF OUR MEN and WOMEN IN UNIFORM LieuT. HOWELL COMPLETES B-24 BOMBER TRAINING FORT WORTH, Tex., May 20-First Lieut. George D. Howell, age 27, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank S.Howell, of 70 Newton St., Ozark.Ala., graduated this week as a B-24 bomber pilot at Fort Worth Army Air Field. ieut. Howell received previous flight training at Ballinger, Sheran and Houston, Texas This week's special class of Liberator bomber pilots will either receive assignment as flight instructors on the giant aircraft or be sent to AAP tactical schools for final phases of pre-combat training. OZARK OFFICER KNOWS WAY AROUND IN SKIES AUBURN, Ala., May 19 - When 1st Lieut. John L. Redd, student Officer at Courtland Army Air Field who attended API before entering the Air Corps, takes off in a BT-13 his instructor is fairly certain he won't get lost. Lieut. Redd has flown more than 1,000 hours as an ATC navigator in the freak weather conditions prevalent in the Pacific, Asiatic and European theatres. Back in 1942, when he was navigator on a DC-3 being delivered to New Calendonia, Lieut. Redd participated in a long search for Capt. Eddie Fickenbacker and his companions. Lieut. Redd has also been an ATC navigator instructor, training other navigators for the high altitude problems they were to counter in flying "the hump" between India and China. A native of Ozark, Ala., he entered API in 1939, where he was majoring in electrical engineering. He has been in the Air Corps since January, 1942. DOWLING BOYS VISIT PARENTS AT PINCKARD Lieut R. A. Dowling, Jr., and his brother, Noel Dowling recently spent a few days at home with their parents. Mr. and Mrs. Ray Dowling of Pinckard. Lt. Dowling is stationed at Camp Lee, Va., and Noel is stationed at Fort Benning, Ga. While at home they called at The Star office. S/SGT. RUFUS R. WATERS NOW WITH AAF IN ENGLAND AN AIR FORCE SERVICE COMMAND STATION, "Somewhere In England-S/Sgt. Rufus R. Waters, husband of Opal N. Waters of Daleville, Ala., is now overseas and has participated in a course designed to bridge the gap between training in the States and Soldiering in an active Theatre of War. At one of the Air Service Command stations known as Control Depots, S/Sgt. Waters was carefully processed by classification experts who made certain that he was well-fitted for the job assigned to him. His next station will be one from which America's fighting planes take off to smash the Nezi war machine. Before entering the Army, he was employed as an Inspector by the Mobile Engineering District. CADET JOE FRANK SOLLIE GRADUATES FROM RIVERSIDE GAINESVILLE, Ga,, May 20 - Riverside Military Academy, the nation's largest military prep school closed its thirty-sixth annual Commencement Exercises here today with graduation of 150 cadets, most of whom will soon enter the Nation's armed forces. Among those honored or graduated during these final exercises was Cadet Joe Frank Sollie, son of Mrs. Mike Sollie, Jr , of 135 Broad St., Ozark, who received the English diploma. HAMILTON DEWITT CHILDREE PROMOTED TO CAPTAIN Son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank N. Childree of Clio route one, he is a graduate of Barbour County High School. CPL. JAMES L. MARSHALL, Son of Rev. and Mrs. B.J. Marshall of Midland City, He is in the Medical Corps. He has a brother T/Sgt. Robert B. Marshall, also with the medical corps. CPL. Grey H. EDWARDS GOES TO CAMP SHELBY. Son of Mr. and Mrs. W.W. Edwards. BRYON WARD RETURNS TO CAMP PERRY, VA. T/5 THOMAS F. WYNN IN PANAMA JUNGLES CPL. Wynn of Ozark, brother of Mrs. Edna F. Free of Ozark, Ala. TWO COFFEE COUNTY BOYS TO BE SEEN IN NEWS REEL S/Sgt. Lester Moore of New Brocton, route one and Cpl. Bill Martin of Elba, to be seen in news reel, the title " G.I's Eye the World". Mrs. Lester Moore is the former Waurie Sconyers, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roscoe Sconyers of Daleville, route one. She and her small son Eric Lee, are making their home in Elba, among friends during Sgt. Moore's assignment overseas. Mrs. Bill Martin is the former Addie Bell Wilson.
