Lola Taylor (Proffitt) of Midland City, Alabama, niece of Mrs. Jim M. Kelly, was home for a few days leave over the week-end. Lt. Proffitt, will be remembered as Lola Taylor, a graduate of Midland City High School of 1938 and a graduate of Moody Hospital School of nursing, 1942. Having been in the Army Nurse Corps since January 3, 1943, stationed at Craig Field, Selma, Alabama. She was married to Lt. Hugh M. Proffitt, Jr., of Richmond. Va,, February 15th, 1944, at the Craig Field Chapel. Lt. and Lt. Proffitt are both Stationed at Craig Field, and occupy an apartment at 506 Malery St. in Selma. Lt. Proffitt Is a regular army man Won his silver wings September, 1943 at Craig Field and since that time, his duties have been a Flying instructor there. SOLDIERS AND WACs IN SUMMER UNIFORMS Soldiers and WACs appeared in khaki summer uniforms on downtown streets- Saturday for the first time this year. Camp Rucker soldier personnel changed over into the summery suntans on April 15. PVT. GARNETT A. SNELLGROVE RETURNS TO LIVINGSTON, LA. Pvt. Garnett A. Snellgrove has returned to his camp in Livingston, La., after spending a 10-day furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. A. Snellgrove, of Ozark route 2. CPL. MIKE SOLLIE AT HOME FROM CAMP HULEN Corporal Mike Sollie is at home on furlough visiting his mother, Mrs. Mike Sollie, Jr. Mike is stationed at Camp Hulen, Texas. CPL. HENDERSON JOHNSON AT AAF RADIO SCHOOL Cpl. Henderson Johnson, Son of Mrs. H. F. Johnson of Ozark has been assigned to the radio school, AAF Training Command, Traux Field, Madison, Wisconsin, for training as a radio mechanic. Upon completion of his training he will be fully Qualified to take his place as a member of the Army Air Forces Base Operators Group or may become eligible for advanced specialized training. Cpl. Johnson was Inducted at Ft. McPherson, Ga., while working as a civilian at Air Service Command Napier Field, Dothan. He was stationed for 18 months at Miami Beach, Fla. FORMER MIDLAND CITY ATHLETE PRODUCING BREAD FOR TROOPS IN PACIFIC SOMEWHERE IN NEW GUINEA -Sergeant Hamilton T. Bailey, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Bailey, 802 S. Andrew Street, Dothan, Ala.,is serving with a field bakery unit in the Southwest Pacific Area. His duties along with the rest of his unit is to produce fresh bread daily for troops in that area. He left for overseas duty in August and arrived at his present station after spending a very short time in Australia. Sergeant Bailey was inducted in the Army on 22 February 1941,at Fort Bragg, N. C. He received his basic training at Fort Benning, Ga. During the time he served in the U. S. A. his unit had taken part in five maneuvers and was on maneuvers in Tennessee when he was called for foreign service. He finished High School in Midland City, Ala., and took an active part in athletics. He was captain of the high school football team for three years and was also captain of the baseball team. He has also taken part In his units athletics and was a member of his unit team, when they won two softball trophies in Camp Forrest, Tenn., in 1942. After finishing high school he was employed by Palmer Optometrist in Charlottee, N. C. He has a brother, Lt. James Bailey In the Army Air Corps, who is stationed in Florida. Sergeant Bailey is entitled to wear the Pre-Pearl Harbor-ribbon, Good Conduct ribbon, the Asiatic Pacific ribbon and the New Guinea Campaign star. PVT. B. Z. REYNOLDS RETURNS TO LA. CAMP Pvt. B. Z. Reynolds has returned to Camp Claiborne, La., after spending several days at home with his wife and family. CAPT. ULUS 0. DANSBY AT HOME ON LEAVE Captain Ulus 0. Dansby, stationed at Fort Knox, Ky., is spending a few days at home. PFC. R. E. VALENTINE, Jr AT HOME ON FURLOUGH Pfc. R. E. Valentine, Jr., is at home on furlough, visiting his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Valentine. Emerson is stationed at Camp Macall, N. C., where he is a member of the 13th Division Airborne Artillery. He recently completed paratroop training at Fort Benning, Ga. T/SGT, GERALD WINDHAM IS BUSINESS MANAGER OF ARMY NEWSPAPER FORT BENNING, Ga., March 24-Technical Sergeant Gerald Windham, formerly with the Public Re- lations office at Fort Benning, now is business manager of the United States Army Dispatch the weekly newspaper of the Persian Gulf Service, according to a copy of the newspaper printed December 6, and mailed on December 11, which has just reached Major H. C. Chapman, Intelligence Officer at the post. Major Chapman formerly headed the combined Intelligence office and Public Relations office before it was expanded to Separate offices about two years ago. Sgt. Windham, a native of Ozark, Alabama, was a member of the 29th Infantry, then went to the Academic Regiment, and when Post Headquarters was placed under the Fourth Service Command, he was assigned as one of the original members of Major Chapman's staff. In the copy of the paper received by Maj. Chapman, the lead story described the visit of President Roosevelt when he went to Teheran, capital of Iran, for the historic conference with Stalin and Prime Minister Churchill. Several pictures of the conference were published in the paper. FORMER DALE COUNTIAN IS AIR WAC STATIONED AT AAFHAC ORLANDO, FLORIDA A woman who is carrying on the tradition of her family is Air Wac Cpl.Velma Jordan, of Miami, widow of a world war 1 veteran, andmother of Radioman ISt- Class Foy Dewey Jordan, U. S. Navy. Cpl. Jordan recently completed a five weeks course in physiotherapy at Station hospital at AAFTAC and is now assigned to that work there. A graduate of the Daleville, Ala., high school, she had one year's business school at Draughns Business school, Montgomery, Alabama. Before enlisting In the Women's Army Corps in the fall of 1942, she was a civilian volunteer in Air- craft Warning Service. After basic training at Fort Des Moines, she was sent back to Miami with a WAC AWS company, and was in the first group of WACs to come to the Tactical Center a year ago last month. In civilian life she was a hotel manager and hostess at Miami Beach and was a member of Harvey Seeds Post, American Legion Auxiliary, at Miami. Her son, who has been in combat areas with the Navy for sometime, is now at a navy school in this country. FORMER OZARKIAN WINS RATING IN SOUTH PACIFIC Curtis N. Peters, Jr., of Opp, writes home from the South Pacific that he is in the best of health and enjoying Navy life. He has the rating of third class Petty Officer and a perfect record for the time he has served the U. S. Navy. Petty Officer Peters enlisted in the Navy Sixteen months ago and has been on foreign duty since his boot training at San Diego, California. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Peters of Opp, formerly of Ozark. PFC. ANDREW AVANT AWARDED THE COMBAT INFANTRYMAN'S BADGE WITH THE 37TH ARMY DIVISION ON BOUGANVILLE-.—For exemplary conduct in combat, Pfc. Andrew Avant, of Newton, Ala., has been presented with the Army's newest award tor infantrymen, the Combat Infantryman Badge. Awarded tor exemplary conduct in combat or for combat action in a major operation, the new medal is a silver rifle on a blue field, with a silver border, Imposed on an eliptical Silver wreath. Private Avant is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Avant,of Route 2 Newton,Ala. Since starting his tour of overseas service on May 26. 1942, he has been stationed on the Fiji Islands, Guadalcanal and the Russell Islands, and is a veteran of the New Georgia Campaign.
