J. D. Newman. who Is stationed at Romulus, Mich., Is spending this week with his wife and baby, who are making their home with his parents, Mr.and Mrs. G. W. Loftin, Ozark. route 3. CPL. MAJOR MILLS AT HOME ON FURLOUGH Corporal Major Mills, stationed at Fort McPherson, Ga.,is at home on furlough with his parents, Dr. and Mrs. J. B. Mills. PVT. JAMES HEAD AT HOME ON FURLOUGH Pvt. James Head is at home on furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Head. James is stationed at Chanute Field at present. PFC. WILMER PARKER AT HOME ON FURLOUGH Pfc. Wilmer Parker enroute from Camp Swift to his new station, Fort Knox, is at home on furloush with his mother, Mrs. Wilmer Parker. SEAMAN ROYSCE SMITH GOES TO NAVY QM SCHOOL Mrs G. R. Smith was notified this week that her son, Roysce, Seaman second class, has been sent, to the U, S. Navy Department QM school at Gulfport, Miss. Roysce's father Commander G.R. Smith, is stationed at Pensacola, Fla.. after twenty-six months in the Pacific area. PFC. LEATHERWOOD BACK ON DUTY Mr. and Mrs. T. H. Leatherwood received a letter from their son this week stating that he was able to be back on duty after beins in the hospital since January. Pfc. Forrest Leatherwood was sent to the hospital from the Pacific area after service in that theatre of operation for several months. PVT. CARMICHAEL SNELLGROVE AT HOME Pvt. Carmichael Snellgrove, stationed at Camp Campbell, Ky., is at home on furlough visiting his parents. Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Sne1lgrove. Mike has been in the service since January, 1941. leaving with the Tank Company, He spent several months in the Pacific before being returned to the States. SGT. JOHN J. PEACOCK REPORTED KILLED Official notice has been received from the War Department that Technical Sgt. John J. Peacock, formerly of Midland City route, who was reported missing on Nov. 26,1943, died Nov. 27. 1943. caused by the sinking of a troop ship by the enemy. Sgt. Peacock is the son of Fitzhugh Peacock, of Midland City route one. OZARK SAILOR RETURNS TO CALIFORNIA POrT Petty Officer 3/c Purvis N. Taylor returned to Camp Parks,Calif., after a 30-day leave with his wife and relatives. Purvis enlisted with the U. S. Navy Seabees September, 1942 and recently returned from overseas after spending fifteen months in the Aleutian Islands. THOMAS M. SAULS. SM 3/c RECENTLY AT HOME Thomas Merlin Sauls SM 3/c has been home on a six-day furlough. He has been on duty for the pastnine months In the South Pacific. After returning to his headquarters at San Francisco. Calif. he was transferred to New Orleans, La., He Is now on duty somewhere in the Atlantic. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alien Sauls of Ozark route 3. They also have a son, Pfc. Milton Sauls, somewhere in England and one son in the Navy Air Corps, Lex Sauls,S2/c, Melbourne, Fla. WOODS LISENBY, PETTY OFFICER 1/c AT HOME Petty Officer Woods Lisenby USN arrived home last Friday on furlough to visit his mother, Mrs. J, L. Lisenby. Woods enlisted in the U. S, Navy in October, 1941 and has seen two years service in the Pacific. His present assignment is on the USS Massachusettes. He has seen plenty of action In the Pacific where our Navy is last working on the Jap's shipping. CAPT. WALKER BYRD SORRELL AT HOME Captain Walker Byrd Sorrell, son of Mrs. Toxie Sorrell, arrived home Tuesday for a two-weeks leave before reporting to his new assignment with the Second Army. Capt. Sorrell has spent the past seven months in Italy with the Fifth Army as a combat engineer. He left Italy June 1st and arrived In the States June 14. Capt. Sorrell was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and the Bronze Star recently for cracking the Gustave Line along the Ra_do. River north of Cassino. Captain Sorrell is being warmly greeted by his many friends. PORTER AND SAM SMITH, BOTH PETTY OFFICERS 1/c AT HOME ON FURLOUGH Two Ozark boys in Uncle Sam's Navy are at home from the Pacific for the first, time in two years. Porter and Sam Smith, both Petty Officers 1/c are at home with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Smith on Ozark route 1. Sam was in Pearl Harbor Dec. 7, 1941 when the Japs pulled their sneak attack and since that inf.infamous incident has had the opportunity to put in plenty of blows at the yellow sons of heaven. Porter has seen plenty of action in the Pacific during the past two years. Both of these young men are looking fine and are receiving a warm welcome home. PFC. JAMES L. SEARCY AWARDED BRONZE STAR Private First Class James L. Searcy, son of Mrs. Jewell Searcy of Newton route one, has recently been awarded the Bronze Star for exhaustive and devoted duty during the recent enemy assault on Hill 700. On one occasion he crawled close to an enemy position to throw hand grenades until his supply was ehausted. His efforts aided materially in the vital defense of the sector until reinforcements arrived. He has been overseas since May 2, 1942 has been stationed in New Zealand, the Fiji Islands, Guadal-canal and New Georgia, and has received the Purple Heart. He is also authorized to wear the Good Conduct Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge and the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre ribbon with appropriate stars for combat.
