Even after the Automobile came on the scene people still relied on the horse and mule for transportion and farming purposes. The first Businesses dealing in trading hores and mukes appeared in Ozark in the 1880's and they continued in business , only a few remaining on a small scale, up untill the World War 11 years. But most had ceased operation during the 1920's or by the late 1930's. J.D. HOLMAN operated a stable and attendant hores and mule business, with wagon sales, harness and the rest that went with the business from 1898 into the late 1930's. His "mule' business was the largest in South Alabama at one time during the 1910-1920 period. It was located on the lot now occupied by Murray Wells Tire Company (1970), across the street from the Brackin Theatre. Other mule traders that were in business in Ozark at one time or another included GARNER, LANEY and Howell, which operated where Auto $ Sav is now located and R.Y. DOWLING, which located on Merrick Ave. next door to the present location of the General Telephone office. W.L. "Bill" CASEY, on Broad Street next door to the Brackin Theatre building C.A. STOKES, located about where the rear portion of the A&P building, now stands. Mack FAUST, on Merrick Avenue, at the same location formerly operated by E.Y. DOWLING.
