This being a part of the program. Indians first settled on the land formerly owned by the Byrd's at the top of Newton Street. They could easily see for miles around as this was the highest place in this particular area. One afternoon one of the children belonging to an Indian family strayed away from home and all the families became alarmed when night came and he had not returned. His name was Zark, so they began calling and their voices could be heard for miles. They were calling 0 Zark, 0 Zark, 0 Zark. Pretty soon a large crowd had gathered. The boy was soon found, and a large celebration was had by all. This story was passed on down when the white man came, so when a name was needed for Ozark, they thought about how the name carried so well and attracted such a large crowd, it was named Ozark.
