Wednesday, December 16, 1885 Page Three Wire Grass Boys It is really a source of pleasure to note how our piney woods boys are progressing in the schools away from home. Mr. Capps, son of Martin Capps, Esq. near Abbeville, is a lieutenant in one of the companies at Auburn, which is indicative of a find standing, even if he were not also known as a young man of exceptionally fine character. Dale has three boys at Auburn. Hogue Simmons, L.W. Wilkinson and C.W. Simmons, the former two of whom are lieutenants and in the senior class, and the latter in the junior class and an orderly sergeant. Hogue Simmons and L.W. Wilkinson are editors of the Auburn Collegian. Mr. Wilkinson is also an assistant in the Chemical Laboratory. C.W. Simmons was a debater on the winning side in a late public discussion given by one of the societies. Dale has two boys at Tuscaloosa, J.B. Dell and A.H. Carmichael, both lieutenants in one or other of the companies. Dell is one of the editors of the University Monthly, and Carmichael and Dell have both been selected – Dell as orator and Carmichael as a debater in the anniversary celebration of the Eresophic Society, to take place in April next. Mr. Pace of Geneva county, son of Nat Pace, Esq. is also a lieutenant, and selected, as were the others by the faculty, as a debater in the university celebration already named. John Rushing, of Coffee county, son of Dr. Rushing was also standing in the front rank in the University, when appointed by Hon. W.C. Oates to a cadetship at West Point. This is a record hard to beat by any section of the State, as none but first-class men occupy the position that these young men do.
