Wednesday morning, January 28, 1885 Page Two Obituaries Mary Carmichael, wife of the Hon. Jesse M. Carmichael, was born in Muscogee County, Georgia, Oct. 15, 1844. While a girl she was brought to the State of Alabama, where she resided during the remainder of her life. She joined the Methodist E. Church, South, at Sylvan Grove, Dale County, 1858; and was converted at the same place 1862. From that period she lived the life of a devoted, earnest Christian woman, meeting all its duties and responsibilities with cheerfulness, courage and perseverance. Her character was strong at all points, especially her supreme love of truthfulness and nice sense of justice. In the family was a wise counselor, a loving and devoted wife, a kind, indulgent, yet cautious mother. She was married October 1st, 1871, and became the mother of four children, three of whom sleep side by side near their mother. She was sorely afflicted nearly twelve months of tumor. During her protracted illness she was subjected to many ordeals of the most trying character, yet in all of these she exhibited courage, fortitude, and cheerfulness, which astonished her physicians. But at last her physical powers gave way, and the gentle, sweet spirit ascended the skies to the God who gave it. This momentous event transpired at 1 o’clock a.m. January 24, 1885 in her lovely home at Ozark, Ala. She leaves an almost heart-crushed husband, weeping mother, one tender precious little son, four affectionate step-children, many other dear relatives, and countless friends to mourn her death. At 1 o’clock Sunday afternoon a large assembly attended her funeral. The services in the church and at the grave were conducted by the Rev. Angus Dowling. She sleeps in Jesus to await the bright morning of the resurrection, when all shall come forth from the power of death. F. The Southern Star Ozark, Dale County, Ala. Wednesday morning, January 28, 1885 Page Three Rest at Last The many friends of Mrs. Mary Carmichael, wife of our fellow townsman, Hon. J.M. Carmichael, will learn with unfeigned sadness and sorrow that she is no more. At or near one o’clock on Saturday morning last the silver cord was loosened and the weary soul found rest. The very appropriate obituary notice so kindly furnished by a friend, which we publish in another column, renders it unnecessary for us to extend this notice. Mrs. Carmichael was a woman of many virtues. In all the relations of life, as wife, mother, neighbor, and friend, she did her whole duty and did it well. Kind and charitable to all, omitting no opportunity for doing good or relieving distress, her departure will leave a void in our community not soon to be filled. Of her extreme and protracted sufferings we need not speak. They were indeed terrible, but were borne with an uncomplaining cheerfulness and fortitude which nothing but the Christian religion ever did or ever can inspire. To the sorrowing and grief stricken family our sincerest sympathy and condolences are tendered.
