Wednesday, June 6, 1888 Page Three Ozark Sabbath School A vacancy in Sunday School class No. 5 occasioned by the death of little Jimmie Dowling, which sad event occurred May 23, 1888. After several days of intense suffering, the dread monster, Death, swept away from our midst one of our class. But, alas! Jimmie, thou art gone to the grave, taken from our midst and buried out of sight. Yet, in our memory thou art endeared as a tender, sweet-scented flower to live to be watered by the tears of remembrance. One by one, we will follow Jimmie until our class No. 5 will number 13 again on the shores of everlasting bliss, when we will join with you in the chorus: “Safe in the arms of Jesus, Safe on His gentle breast.” While it is our loss, and we so much regret it, yet, believing as we do, Jimmie, it is thine own eternal gain. The Lord is our Shepherd, we shall not want, and as the Lord loves the young, pure and good, we humbly bow, as Jimmie is the choice of our class. They will be done on earth as it is in heaven. To the bereaved parents, brothers and sisters, we extend our sincere sympathies. Class No. 5 The Southern Star Ozark, Dale County, Ala. Wednesday, June 13, 1888 Page Three We the committee of the Methodist Sunday School of Ozark, Ala. submit the following resolutions. Whereas, it has pleased an Allwise and ever gracious God to remove from our midst, our little friend and brother Jimmie Dowling, born February 9th, 1881 and departed this life May 23rd, 1888. To know that the bright, beautiful little boy who we loved and cherished so tenderly has gone from us forever and will never again mingle his sweet little voice with ours in this Sunday School, and so know that we will never again be permitted to teach him another lesson is indeed sad. But what a consolation to know that he is now singing praises to his Redeemer, in the beautiful world above the clouds, where the angels dwell and sing, and the sun always shines, and the children are every joyous and happy. Therefore be it resolved, That in his death we have lost a faithful pupil in our Sunday School. That we will cherish his memory, and while we feel sad since his little spirit has winged its flight from earth to heaven, yet we will humbly submit to God’s will in this sad bereavement. That we extend to the grief stricken family our sincere sympathy in their great trouble. That we pray God to give them that fortitude and endurance which He alone can give his sorrow-stricken children. May they realize that the same good and wise Providence who bestows health, peace and happiness, sees fit to carry his children through sickness, adversity and even death. That a copy of these resolutions be spread upon the minutes of the Sunday School, that a copy be sent to the family, and that the Southern Star be requested to publish the same. Miss Nora Bowen J.F.
