Slaughter Dies Sunday After A Long Illness Dr. Dow Perry, Slaughter, Sr., 82, a minister in the Alabama Methodist Conference since 1899,died in a local hospital Sunday following a long illness. Dr. Slaughter, highly revered in the community, had resided in Ozark with Mrs. Slaughter, by, whom 'he is survived, since his retirement from the ministry in 1948. He was born in Lagrange, Georgia, on May 3, 1876, the son of Rebecca Perry and Thomas J. Slaughter. He was a graduate of Southern Methodist College at Greensboro, Alabama, which is now Birmingham-Southern in Birmingham. He entered the ministry in 1899, and since that time has served twice as pastor oŁ the first Methodist Church in Ozark, for three years beginning in 1913, and from November, 1945, until his retirement in 1948. Dr. Slaughter was a former district superintendent of the Pensacola, Eufaula, Selma and Montgomery Methodist districts. He preached tor 49 years and had held pastorates in DeFuniak Springs, Marianna, Pensacola, Andalusia, Auburn, Dothan, Mobile and Montgomery. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, here. teacher of the Men's Bible Class, and an honorary member of the church's official board. Active in civic affairs, he was a Master Mason, a member of the 0zark Kiwanis Club, and served as president of the CowiKee Men's Club. Dr. Slaughter is survived by his widow, the former Mary Leila Owens of Loflin, Alabama, in Russell County, by one son, Dow Perry Slaughter, Jr., of Spartanburg, S, C., three daughters, Mrs. Thomas Lee of Louisville, Alabama, Mrs. Jack Hand, of Jacksonville, Florida, and Miss Julia Lee Slaughter of Montgomery; three grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 3:30 at the First Methodist Church. Officiating were the church's pastor, the Rev. Warren I. Lindsay, Dr. A. E. Shafer, Chipley, Florida, Rev. Louie Wilson,pastor of Westview Methodist Church in Ozark, and Rev. Marvin K. Vickers of Troy. Interment was in Westview Cemetery with Holman Funeral Home directing. Honorary pallbearers included Dr. G. R. Smith, Marion W. Redd, and members of the Methodist Church Board of Stewards, the Kiwanis Club, and the Cowikee Men's Club. Active pallbearers were W.V. Drew, Foster Hardenm Sam Carroll, Jr., John Carroll, George Dunn, Victor Taylor, Sterling Williford,, and H.L.
