Reprinted Jan. 20, 1999. In Memory Of Sgt. Shellie Ray McKeller Sergeant Shellie Ray McKeller was born September 15, 1907 and departed this life as a prisoner of war at Camp Osaka in Japan on June 16, 1943 according to reports from the Japanese government through the International Red Cross. He was married to Miss Mary Elizabeth Paulk in February 1936 and to this happy union, one son was born, whom they called Charlie Mack. Friends throughout the community will remember his cheerful smile and winnning personality. He united with Salem Baptist church at an early age and lived a faithful and loyal member. In January 1926, he enlisted in the U. S. Army having served fifteen years at his death. He was stationed in Hawaii for three years and later assigned to Fort Bragg, Fort McClellan and Fort Crochet when he was sent to the Philippines serving there twenty-five months suffering untold hardships until the fall of Corregidor around May 5, 1942. In the going of Sgt. McKeller we feel that we have lost a useful citizen and a good soldier. May the thought that he gave his life heroically in the service of his county be of sustaining comfort to the family, and may his memory live among his friends for whom he fought so faithfully. Therefore, Be it Resolved, 1 That Salem Baptist Church, bow in humble submission to Him who doeth all things well. 2. That we commend to the family, the community and the church, the divine guidance of Him who is able to lead us to a richer and more useful life and later reunite us in that city not made with hands eternal in the Heavens. 3. That a copy of these resolutions be placed on the minutes of the church, one presented to the family and one furnished the Southern Star for publication. The Committee.
