Wednesday morning, January 21, 1885 Page Three Mrs. Poyner, wife of Mr. John Poyner of our county died at her home near Newton on the 13th inst. (paper torn) of many years duration. Mrs. Poyner was a true Christian woman beloved by all, and esteemed for her womanly virtue and Christian walk and godly conservation. The Southern Star Ozark, Dale County, Ala. Wednesday morning, January 28, 1885 Page Two Obituaries We know that we cannot do or say anything that would benefif the dead – but we wish to say a few words in memory of Mrs. Sallie Poyner, lately deceased. We wish to say a few words of condolence and sympathy, if no more, to the bereaved family. If there is any family that should receive our warmest sympathies, it is Mr. John Poyner’s. (He but having one whole arm.) Three months and one day before the death of Mrs. Poyner, little Charley Poyner, who for some time had been insane, died. He left a father, a sister, a mother – who for ten or twelve years had been so afflicted with scrofula as to be unable to walk – and relatives to mourn his death. (Those who have lost a son or daughter know how to sympathise.) But now their griefs and sorrows are still greater. Mrs. Poyner, though afflicted for a long time bore her afflictions with the greatest of patience and loving faith. She, no doubt, had for a long time believed and perhaps realized that, “all things work together for good to those that love God.” During her afflictions, she always appeared to be lively, cheerful and goodnatured. And at the same time, few, perhaps none, know or realize the extent of her troubles – her sufferings. She was born at Newton, Ala. May 1st, 1844. She joined the Missionary Baptist church in early life and has ever since lived a devoted Christian. She died at her home 3 ¾ miles east of Newton January 13th, 1885. May her Christian walk and Godly conversations ever prove a blessing to those with whom she came in contact. She is no more, but her blessed influence for good, yet widens and deepens. Let us ever remember that, though our troubles and sorrows are many. God’s grace is sufficient to bear them. And let us ever strive to meet our loved ones who have gone before in that happy beyond, where parting is no more; and where we can gather around that great White Throne of God and sing his praises evermore.
