Wednesday, June 20, 1888 Page Two Obituary John G. Strickland was born August the 18th, 1865, and departed this life at the residence of his father, near Clopton, Dale county, Ala., on the 7th day of May 1888, being in the 23rd year of his age. He leaves an aged father and mother, several brothers and sisters, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his death. He was an obedient son, a loving and an affectionate brother and friend. He joined the M.E. Church South at Magnolia in the year 1883. He was distinguished for his many Christian virtues, and was an active consecrated member of the church and devoted to Sunday school. He was a lover of Christ and his people, and was ready for every good word and work. He was afflicted for several months before his death, but he endured his suffering with Christian patience and fortitude, and as he neared the end of his weary pilgrimage, his hope and faith seemed to brighten, and he left every evidence that death to him was but an entrance into life eternal. He showed a sweet and patient spirit in the crisis of his great pain, and passed away as fast as a little child falls asleep on the mother’s breast. But he is not dead; he has only gone before and our loss is his eternal gain. While we mourn the loss of so dear a friend, and such an excellent Christian young man, we are cheered by the reflection that death is not the final separation; but when earth’s cares are ended we cherish the hope of meeting him again in a brighter and better world, and we say to the distressed family, “weep not,” but strive to meet John in the eternal paradise of God, where sickness and sorrow cannot enter and parting is unknown.
