A dogfly is made of cotton sheeting about 5 feet square, with buttons and button holes, on three sides, each weighed about one and a half or two lbs. Three men sleep together, each has a fly, We button two flies together, stretch it across a ridge pole, close up the North or back end with the third fly, it is a tent with the front end open. With a sword or bayonet, dig a trench around it, pilling the dirt just under the edge of the tent to keep the water out. After cutting two forks about four feet long, a ridge pole, and some stakes with our knives, we would put up the tent in five minutes.
