of men and the battery that was shelling us  we were __ing down, shells were 
hitting the ground or bursting all around us.
  About 2 P.M. we mooved (sic) forward down and across the field. After 
crossing a dry gully near the center of the vally they opened on us with small 
arms and our boys were dropping more frequently. We charged but before we got 
to their line someone hollowed liedown. Col. ADAMS soon told us to go on and we 
did go on and to their line but they left, and left their dead and woonded and 
four brass cannon that had been using shell and canister shot so appectualy on 
us, We pushed on down the slope and across the second  valley and on up another 
slope, and into some timber to where they had a second or fresh line behind a 
fence.
  We got to within thirty yards of the fence but our ranks were so thined
