Gann , the Paper is no longer in business , All articles from this Newspaper are from the files of Mary Vic Paramore of Ariton. ) The Universalist Church, one of Ariton's oldest landmarks. was donated to the city of Ariton for use. as a Community Center. Since the city accepted the building several years ago general repair, such as a new roof. was undertaken to prevent further deterioration of the structure. Recently. a committee of interested citizens organized to raise funds plan and oversee to building's restoration. Built in 1867, ( 1913) the sloped floor, raised platform, choir loft, and large pew seating capacity lend the building to a variety of uses. First stage renovations have included removal of old shrubs and general lot cleaning removal of trees dangerous to the structure, restoring the masonary interior, restoring original pews and removal of old paneling. These projects were completed with funds provided from donations by friends and relatives of former church members. Funds had been collected over past years and held for such purposes. The city of Ariton purchased a fence to be erected on the property and has overseen labor involved in the project. All available funds have now been expended and the committee is in the process of proceeding with fund raising activities. Among first fund raising efforts will be the placing of plaques on pews and windows in “honor" or "in memory of" for donations. Donations for pews range upward from $175.00; windows upward from $100.00. A limited number of pews and windows are now available to the general public for purchasing. Anyone interested in making a donation to the restoration effort for such recognition may contact Jann Carter Phillips or Debra Alluns for infonnation. Other fund raising projects will soon be undertaken. Anyone wishing to join the committee or participate in any way may contact Billy Herring, John Garner, Mary Vic Paramore, Dorothy Laney, or Jivas Sutton for information.
