Boon to Ariton Economy Carter ManufacturingCo., Inc. is Ariton's largest employer with a work force averaging 60, and at peak periods reach 100. In business for the past 13 years, the firm is engaged in manufacturing all types of handling and processing equipment for the peanut industry. Charlie Carte, President, says " what we make is everything that is needed to handle peanuts after they reach the shelling plants. Carter Manufacturing Co. is something of a family operation as the president is joined by his Wife, Mrs.Sammie Carter as secretary-,treasurer. and his brotner, Eugene Carter as purchasing agent. Other key personnel at the management level are Ronnie Snellgrove, engineer, and Steve Mixson, draftsman. While 60 employees is about an average level for Carter, about half of this work force is comprised of a field crew headed by L.J. Peters. This group goes out and sets up the equipment manufactured at the Ariton based industry at shelling plants throughout Southeast Alabama and Southwest Georgia. In manufacturing, c1eaners, sand screens, elevators, conveyors, sizing equipment, gravity tables, warehouses and assorted other items, Eugene Carter said the firm consumes about 30 tons of steel a month. Supervising the work of sheet metal workers and welders in the Ariton plant is shop foreman Preston Senn. While Carter sells varying quantities of peanut processing equipment, they have been averaging putting in two complete peanut shelling plants a year in the market area they serve. Charlie Carter pointed out a new product they are manufacturing which is being ordered by plants to meet regulations set forth by the Environment Protection Agency. The item is a cone shaped dust control system that keeps dust particles out of the atmosphere in the milling operation. This was designed and manufactured at Carter Manufacturing and has been sold recently to such customers as Columbian Peanut in Ozark. Sessions in Enterprise, and Dothan Oil Company. Carter Manufacturing Co., is not only unique in its location in Ariton and Dale County, but they are somewhat witout equal in the heartland of the peanut growing country. To illustrate this, Charlie Carter said of the last 16 peanut shelling plants installed in Alabama and Georgia , his firm built the equipment and installed 15 of them. Manufacturing of this type has a family tie for Charlie Carter a native of Pike County. He works in conjunction with his brother, Lewis M. Carter of Donaldsonville. Ga., who is ,engaged in building shellers and cleaners. His father and uncle started Carter Brothers in Brundidge about 40 years ago and he worked for them for a number of years involved in manufacturing ,lawn mowers, garden plows, and various other products until he moved down to Ariton to launch his present operation. Agriculture plays an important part in the economic life of Ariton. While a thriving livestock auction yard sat on the site occupied by Carter Manufacturing Co. for many years, it went out of business. Now Carter Manufacturing Co. is a thriving, growing industry, an example of a success story in the field of agri-business.
