           Ariton's Youngest Mayor Now in Office 10 Years

  When Billy C. Herring became Mayor of Ariton 10 years ago, he had the 
distinction of being the youngest mayor in the towns history, as he was only 25 
st the time.
  At 35 he is stii a "young mayor", but he is now a seasoned veteran in 
municipal goverment of Dale County's northern most town, now observing its 70th 
anniversary as an incorporated muncipality.
  Durning his tenure in office Mayor Herring has seen some seven miles of dirt 
streets paved in the city limits. New sidewalks have been paved in front of the 
business district. the business community has grown with the construction of a 
new bank building a new super market with the opening of a Dixie Dandy Store, 
as well as a new convenience food store. In addition to this the town has a new 
library, and a new National Guard armory.
  The Ariton Rescue Squad was created during this period, and now has two 
rescue vehicles, in addition to upgrading the fire department and police 
department with new vehicles.
  A new water tank and new well, costing approximately $118,000 is another new 
addition accomplished during the administration of Mayor Herring.
  A native of Ariton, Mayor Herring is the son of Mr.and Mrs. William Herring. 
He also has a brother, Bennie, living in Ariton.
  Married to the former Brenda Cobb, they are the parents of two children, 
Shasta, 14, and Mischa, age four.
