The Town of Ariton is celebrating its 70th birthday durning the week of June 21-27, using the theme, "USA 200- Ariton 70. Special events are planned throughtout the week, beginning today (Wednesday) with a Senior Citizen Day. The celebration will continue, Saturday June 26, with a parade to begin at the Ariton High School at 2: p.m., continuing to the National Guard Armory with exhibits at the armory after the parade. The highlight of the week's activities will come Sunday, June 27, with a song service and religious service slated to begin at the Ariton High School Gymnasium, at 10 A.M. Lunch will be served at noon and at 1:30 p.m. officials will recognize the oldest active Black citizen and the oldest active White citizen of the community, along with recognition of citizens who were living in 1906 and who were affiliated with the school,and churches. The history of the town will be given by Creel Richardson and following the presentation of flags by the color guard, those assembled will join singing "America" and "The Star Spangled Bannner" The services, will be closed with prayer, after whiCh birthday cake will be served to, the assemblage. The first officials of the Town of Ariton in 1906 included J.E. Barnes, mayor; councilmen J.C. Barnes, E.R. Phillips, R.H. Norris, W.W. Weed, and W.L. Dean; and J.W. Richardson, clerk. Present day officials are: Billy C.. Herring, mayor; Jimmy L. Danner, Kenneth Baker, John Lisenby and Obie R. Laney, councilmen; and Jacqueline' Danner, clerk.
