Located in the northeast area of the county near historic Pea River, its recently increased industrial expansion has been provided by several local industries such as Hutto Milling Company, which has completed a new hatchery and a broiler program. Ariton Manufacturing Company produces fertilizer spreaders, distributors, elevators and other type farm equipment and Ariton has recently gained its first farm equipment establishment, Metcalf Tractor Company. Its postoffice building is relatively new, having been built in 1965, and Ariton High School is presently being remodeled with the addition of a library. Complete new decorating is being done on the school plant. Ariton has a modern city hall and a National Guard Unit. Mayor Billy C. Herring and Councilman Obie Ray Laney, Rodney Skipper, Dr. R. F. Zumestein, Shelly Price and John Lisenby are pursuing active town planning which includes a sewage system, repair and expansion of the water system and other cmmunity programs. Continuation of work on the community's pet project - impounding Pea River at its head to provide 5,000 acres for a joint recreational, flood control and wildlife area - is going forward. Young Mayor Billy Herring says "We have been promised further pogress for this project in the spring. This will be a real breakthrough for us insofar as, being able to provide recreational and other facilities needed for our community. Bank deposits in our local bank are up more than a million dollars this year, so we know we are making steady progress. We want to keep pace with good long- range planning for our community."
