Adams (1873-1876) (1880-1881) Joseph A. Adams was born October 15, 1843, at Oak Bowery, Chambers County, Alabama. He was the son of William S. and Jane (Adams) Adams, the children of first cousins, the former a native of Dinwiddie County, Virginia, who later lived at Oak Bowery and Opelika, and at Columbus, Georgia. After his education at 0ak Bcwery and Opelika, he enlisted in Company B, 4ah Alabama infantry regiment and served from the beginning to the end of the Civil War. He established "The Southern Star" in 1867 at Newton, but two years later moved to Ozark where he was Circuit Clerk from 1872 to 1884. He was a Democrat, a Methodist, and a Mason. He was married October 24, 1867, at Newton, to Annie Laurie Kirksey, daughter of West Harris and Sophia Kirksey. The Kirkseys had moved from North Carolina to Randolph County, Georgia, and then to Dale County, where he was a cotton manufacturer. He was the father of seven children: William Robert, Joseph Harris (editor-publisher of The Southern Star from 1887-1907), Jesse Clayton, Annie Laura, Georgia Estelle, John Quincey (proprietor and editor of the "Star" on the death of his brother Joseph H.), and Samuel Grady. He died February 4, 1887, at Ozark, Additional Comments: A.L.
