W. Kirkland 1897-1898 and 1903-1904 William W. Kirkland was born April 7, 1864,in Henry County, six miles from Abbevilte, son of Washington and Martha Ann Kirkland. He was the grandson of the Honorable William T. and Sarah Ann Kirkland and Malcolm and Theresa Murphy. He was educated in the Oakey Grove Church in Henry County and at Abbeville and Skipperville. Afterwards he went into farming in Henry County. January 17, 1884, he married Miss Laura Matthews, daughter of James M. and Mary J. Matthews. n 1888 he moved to Ozark. He studied Law, practiced in Ozark, and was later elected Justice of the Peace. In 1900 he was presidential elector at large for the state, and in 1901 he was elected a member of the state constitutional convention. He was Vice-President of the bank at Headland for a number of years and was a director of "the Planters and Merchants Bank of Ozark. He was also a Democrat and a Mason.
