As to Asbury- it is an older community that Sk'ville. It started as the Snell family gave land for the M.E. church, cemetery, and school. The Payne Bros. (Warren and Davis) had a store and sawmill there before they moved up the road about 3 miles to Sk'ville.I remember the old school- one big room and had a fireplace in one end. My dad and his sibblings went to school there as they lived close by. My grandad, J.W. Stephens was on the school board. As far as to the actual history, that is about all I know. First- that is where my dad got his first pair of shoes, he was born in 1895. Warren Payne, married my grandad Hughes' older sis, Dorcas. They, Unc Warren and Mr. Davis Payne(bros) owned the store together for many years. They had all kinds of business ventures together,It was, til their families got so large, til they had to seperate their business ventures. Coy Payne ran the store after Unc Warren passed. I have been there many times. When they had the Centenial in Ozark, a lot of folks came out to the old store as Coy still had a lot of old style clothes-- they 'cleaned him out'!! I hear they have an eating place there now. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/alfiles/ File size: 1.9 Kb
