Matthews Stadium Dedication Sunday 2:30 p.m. $135,000 Athletic Arena Seats 6,000 The formal dedication services for the Dr. A. D. Matthews Stadium will be Sunday afternoon, September 8, at 2:30, with the ceremony being held in the new stadium, adjacent to the Ozark Senior High School. The Dr. A. D. Matthews Stadium, so named in honor of the local physician, Dr. A. D. Matthews, who has spent his entire life here in Dale County, and who continues to serve in many capacities the people with whom he resides, has been completed recently at a total cost of-some $135,000.00, including the land. It has been designed to seat 6,000 people, and will be complete with rest rooms, press boxes, ticket offices, and a standard football field and track layout. The entire stadium project already has been fenced and concrete sidewalks have been provided from the main gate to the seating areas on either side of the football field. Lights are being stalled this week, atop creosote pine poles 100 feet high. The program for the dedication services announced by the Stadium Board of the City of Ozark. is as follows: 2:30, musical interlude- Ozark High School Band; 3:00 National Anthem - Dixie - Ozark High School Band. Flag Raising ceremony by Color Bearers and Color Guard of Post No. 82, American Legion, followed by the invocation by the Rev. Marcus H. Smith, Pastor, Westview Heights Methodist Church, Ozark. The address of welcome and dedicatory preamble will be given by Mayor James Douglas Brown, of the City of Ozark, and who will also introduce Dr. A. D. Matthews and members of his family. Other detailed subjects, and the speakers, have been announced as follows: "Dr. Matthews and Dale County", Charles 0. Stokes, Dale County attorney; "Dr. Matthews and The City of Ariton," Paul Hutto, Past Mayor, City of Ariton; "Dr. Matthews And The City of Ozark," Wilmer Parker, Jr., Cashier, Bank of Ozark; "Dr. Matthews and Education," Creel Richardson, Principal, Ariton High School; "Dr. Matthews and The Church," Rev. L. Don Miley, Pastor, Ozark Baptist Church; "Dr. Matthews and The Medical Profession," Dr. Robert L. McLaughlin, President, Dale County Medical Society; "Dr. Matthews In Bronze," Henry B. Steagall, II, Representative State Legislature from Dale County, and the "Dedicatory Address: 'Dr. Matthews, The Man, Son, Husband, Father and Soldier' ", Rev. William J. Snellgrove, Pastor, Chalkhead Baptist Church, followed by the beneidiction rendered by the Rev. Charles B. Liddell, Pastor. First Methodist Church in Ozark. Master of ceremonies for the ceremonies was announced as James H. Kelley. The Stadium Board of the City of Ozark issued a cordial invitation to everyone from everywhere to attend the dedication ceremonies Sunday afternoon, and a large crowd has been anticipated.
