From Broad Street, turn west on Dallas Avenue. Turn left onto King Street into the cemetery, which lies on either side of this street. The portion east of King street, called "Old Live Oak Cemetery," was reserved as a cemetery in 1829. The western portion, called "Live Oak Cemetery," was purchased by the city of Selma in 1877 from Sallie Ann Jones. Most people call the entire cemetery "Old Live Oak Cemetery" as there is a newer cemetery a few miles down the road called "New Live Oak Cemetery." The cemetery office is in New Live Oak and the people there are happy to help you find a grave. The original eastern part of the cemetery, called the West Selma Cemetery in the mid-1800s, was laid out haphazardly, to the dismay of many of the townspeople. By 1865 the Selma City Council passed an ordinance calling the cemetery "a nuisance" and prohibited any more burials. Burials were to be done in the East Selma Cemetery built in 1855 and maintained by the city. It was used predominately for area slaves who died in a small pox epidemic in 1860. Some confederate soldiers are buried there. In 1858 the city council decided that West Selma Cemetery should be resotred and the cemetery put "in good order." The city added to the cemetery when it purchased the land in 1877. The western section is laid out neatly by sections, blocks, and rows with roads and walkways, making it easy to walk around and easy to find the occupants. Information in parenthesis ( ) added by Carolyn Golowka, and taken from census records.
