I had a very pleasant journey with the exception of 28 miles of staging which was quite disagreeable. There was nine of us packed in a single coach and from the oppressive heat we were almost reduced to suffocation. With this single exception Aunt, you might have come with me with perfect ease and safety. I have been to see Uncle Ephraim and Aunt Polly, who were greatly pleased to hear from you and express a hope that some of you will visit us. Aunt Polly had a severe attack of sickness during my absence but she has recovered and is well as usual. Mother is sick this morning though I am in hopes not seriously. That leaves the rest of us all well. I find crops here quite flourishing but farmers are badly in the gr???, and we are having a good deal of rain so they are likely to remain so. I have just received a letter from my brother in Texas which brings rather unfavorable news. He says, himself and several of Sisters family have been sick and that he thinks no person can have health there the first year. Though it is a good cotton country, yet the navigation is so bad there no getting it to market. Aunt you must excuse my short letter as I have nothing of interest to write about. Give my love to all the connection and friends and except the same. Tell them all to write, it would be a great pleasure to hear from you, even if it was not more than half a dozen lines. Yours Affectionately, James Rogers Additional Comments: James Rogers, wrote this letter to his Aunt Elizabeth Rogers Lewis, who was living in Wilkinson Co Ga. James, was the son of Benjamin Rogers and Penelope West. James, was a school teacher, he migrated to Anderson Co Texas in the Winter of 1857, he married Elizabeth Ann Anderson Day.
