Sharp was shot near Burnsville, in that county, on the 14th inst., by a man named Noles, while attempting to arrest the latter under a warrant for the infamous crime of incest. Noles immediately fled, and though hotly pursed, made his escape. A reward of $500 is offered for his arrest, and parties are now out in pursuit of him. It is hoped they may speedily succeed in arresting and bringing him to justice.” ______________________________________________ This article was published in the Alabama Weekly Journal on the date shown. The article was attributed to the Selma Enterprise of nearby Dallas Co. For more newspaper articles on the murder-and two transcripts of the trials of Joseph Noles(Knowles)see several entries on this site. All newspaper items were found on microfilm at the Alabama State Archives, and the court transcripts were found in Alabama Supreme Court journals there. A few court dockets were found in Dallas Co.-but evidently the bulk of local court records did not survive. Note: A duplicate article was published in the Autuaga Citizen on February 24, 1853. The warrant noted here was only a “peace warrant” sworn by the defendant’s wife; no mention of incest was found in any of the legal records.
