L. Pettus Dead. Speaker of Alabama House of Representatives Passes Away. Mobile, Ala., March 6. -- A special from Montgomery to the Item says: Speaker Francis L. Pettus, of the Alabama house of representatives, died at 6 o'clock this morning from his long lasting complaint, rheumatism. The members of his immediate family were with him. Senator E. W. Pettus, his father, has not arrived from Washington. Mr. Pettus had been ill since about the tenth. One of the most conspicuous figures in state politics is taken away. Will Be Buried in Selma. Selma, Ala., March 6. -- The death of Francis L. Pettus, of Selma, who was speaker of the house of representatives, and which occurred in Montgomery at 6 o'clock this morning, was learned here with sincere sorrow and regret by every one, although it was thought by many that he would not recover from the spell of sickness which has confined him to his bed in Montgomery for the past few weeks. Mr. Pettus was the only son of Senator and Mrs. A. W. Pettus and has been prominent in the affairs of Alabama ever since he reached manhood. The remains will be brought to Selma tonight, but the interment will not occur until the arrival of his mother and father and Senator Morgan from Washington. The Dallas Bar association and a large number of citizens will go to Montgomery this evening and escort the remains to Selma tonight. Mr. Pettus leaves a wife and two children, son and daughter, to mourn his loss. Additional Information: Francis Leigh Pettus was buried in Old Live Oak Cemetery, Section B, lot 10 East. On his stone is as follows: Son of Edmund Winston Pettus & Mary Lucinda Chapman. Born Oct 7, 1858, died Mar 6. 1901 Manly in form, pleasing in manner, quick of mind, brave of heart, an able lawyer, a strong legislator, a loyal friend, a devoted son, a fond husband, and an indulgent father. His distinction was he loved his fellow man. A Tribut of Love from the Mobile Bar Pilots. Buried in the same plot is Francis's wife, Mary Eleanor Knox Pettus. On her stone is: "daughter of William Spanner & Sara G. Knox, wife of Francis L. Pettus July 20, 1942." A son of Francis & Mary Knox Pettus, Edmund Winston Pettus is also buried in this cemetery in Section B, lot 2 East. He was husband of Mary Boykin Dawson. Edmund was born Oct. 5, 1884 and died July 25, 1945. He is in the same lot with his grandfather, Edmund Winston Pettus, born in Limestone Co., AL, July 6, 1821, died Hotsprings, NC July 27, 1907. He served in the CSA. Edmund (Sr.'s) wife, Mary Lucinda Chapman Pettus, born in Huntsville, Ala. on Nov. 24, 1823, died in SElma July 15, 1906 alos occupies a space in this lot.
