GIVEN under my hand, and the Great Seal of the State affixed at the City of Montgomery, this 4th ______day of_____March____ A.D. one thousand eight hundred and fifty- 3__ and of the Independence of the United States of America, the seventy-__Seventh__ Henry W. Collier BY THE GOVERNOR: V. M. BENHAM Secretary of State _____________________________ Notes: This extradition paper was found among loose papers in Governor Collier’s Executive Office files in the Alabama State Archives. It was evidently never picked-up by the men named. William B. Hall was a witness to the crime. His fear, and reckless words, likely led to the gunfire. See his testimony and that of others in the two Alabama Supreme Court appeal transcripts on this site. Joseph Noles(Knowles)was captured in Dooly Co. Georgia by two Dallas Co. men, and tried twice in Cahaba, then the Dallas County seat. Apparently local details of his trials no longer exist; I found only brief docket entries, in a somewhat limited search in the Courthouse Annex. The paper shown here was a tri-folded legal document with the words below on the outside cover-(that image is not shown): “The State vs. Joseph Noles Demand on the Governor of Georgia Iss. 4th March 1853” File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/dallas/photos/documents/extradit1519nph.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/alfiles/ File size: 3.1 Kb
