S. Hwy 11 North, Fort Payne, AL; submitted by Roland Tate 8/10/2002) CHURCH HISTORY & EXPLANATIONS: The church covenant was written, dated October 4th, 1871 and signed by Thomas Scott, Permilia Scott, J. M. Fauler, Elizabeth Fauler, Martha Franklin, Fannie Blake, Sam Been, J. G. Bynum, and J. N. Franklin, Presbatary. Agree to be known as Primitive Baptist bearing title of 'Baptist Church of Christ at Smith Creek'. The last Church Ledger entry was made in September of 1949. (Spelling as transcribed in Ledger) I am sure that a number of children's graves have been lost over the years as I vaguely remember a number of sandstone markers that came to the surface with erosion and were moved around and finally lost in Cemetery maintenance. There is an adult grave marked with native stone between the graves of Imery Hiland and Bayard Hulgan that is unidentified and I believe that there are at least 3 unidentified children around the Post Oak Tree near that adult headstone. Other native stone markers include in a row S. To N.-Joseph F. Poe, Evaline Poe, John C. Poe, and Sammie E. Poe. South of Odessie (Veal) and Maggie (Shankles), wives of W. H. Tate, is an infant child of Wallace and Odessie Tate, born and died a few days before Odessie died. The earliest marked grave is that of Eliza, wife of G. W. Denson, who died 18 May 1888. No Denson is mentioned in the church ledger I have accessed; however, the first 24 years of records are missing. After Eliza's death, G. W. Denson md Maggie E. Stoner on 28 Jul 1889.
