Herman C. Driskill Co.B, 823 T.D. Bn. January 5th, 1945 Dear Sis, I will try to answer your letter that I received some few days ago. I just wonder how you are by this time. I'm doing fine. It is real cold here and there is about six inches of snow, but the cold here doesn't seem to bother me like it does in the states. I'm not in the same army now that I was in, so you can figure out for yourself what Army I'm in now. I know all of you have been worried about me since the Germans struck their big mighty blow, but I'm O.K. I did heap heat off of one German counter attack and I mean I was right in the thick of it. Yes, I wrote to Jim and I also received a letter from him Love, Herman Somewhere in Belgium PFC Herman C. Driskill Co.B, 823 T.D. Bn. Sunday, January 14, 1945 Dear Sis, Just a few lines to let you know that I am O.K. It is still cold here and a big snow on. My mail is coming in pretty good now. I received twelve letters the day before yesterday and the most of them were from you and mother and too I also received two letters and a Xmas package from Mattie Lee, yesterday. I am not with the army now that I was with. I've been with every American Army in Europe except the Third. Tell Irene that I received her letter and will try to answer I before very long. Someone wrote me that Thelma said that I never answered her letter, but I did. She just didn't get it. Did you ever get that Seventh Army patch that I sent you with a letter. P.S. Ha! Notice the change in rank? I rate don't I? Love, Herman Belgium PFC Herman C. Driskill Co.B, 823 T.D. Bn. January 28, 1945 Dear Sis, Just another few lines to let you know that I'm O.K. except I'm a little tired. Another boy and myself went a hunting today, but we didn't find anything except a rabbit. They say there is a lot deers and wild boar here. It is still cold and a big snow here. I'm not in combat now and I am not near the front. I've been getting your letters regular and I also received Cleo's letter yesterday. I hope it is true that Mina Lybrand is married now. I know she is happy. I am sorry to hear about Eugene O. being wounded. I've been thinking for a long time he must be in the hospital because I've written him several letters and haven't received answers. I know that all of you were glad to see Bernice. Did I ever tell all of you about being in the 1st Army? And too, did I tell you about being in Accken. It is a large city and torn up plenty. Love, Herman Somewhere in Germany PFC Herman C. Driskill Co.B, 823 T.D. Bn. Sunday, Feb. 11, 1945 Dear Sis, I received another one of your letters yesterday and I also got a letter from Mother. I am very glad to hear from you all and to know all of you were well. I'm doing alright now. I've been feeling pretty tough caused from having a couple of teeth pulled and too I've had the G.I., or better known as the bowel trouble. All of my front teeth are out between my eye teeth. I'm having a bridge made sometime soon. I am now with the Ninth Army and I am still with the same Division. The sky is just full of American bombers coming from the front after bombing the Germans. I got a letter from Jim a few days ago and he was kidding me about winning that bet off of me. I'll bet he didn't tell you about me winning a five dollar bet off of him in the spring. Yes, Jim does have a pretty high opinion of himself, but he is a nice guy and has a good principle. Don't ever take him serious because he is not that type, of course I guess you know that. I went yesterday and took a hot shower. I got a letter a few days ago from Eugene Oliver, but it was written before he was wounded. I saw a boy a few days ago from my old outfit that is here in this Battalion and he has been in the outfit a little longer than I have, but I didn't know until I got Jim's letter telling me about him being here. I am sure sorry to hear about Uncle Tommie being sick, but I'm glad he's improving. I got a letter from him a few days ago, but it was written before he took sick. I got a letter from C.B. and he seems to be very proud of his wife and of course I'm glad that he is. I wish them both the very best of luck. I've still got a few more Christmas packages on the way. I got the one that mother and dad sent me and I reckon that I got that package that you sent. Was it the one with the toothpaste and the razor blades? I've never gotten the peanuts, but I guess I will. Well I will say so long for this time. Your Bud, Herman PFC Herman C. Driskill Co.B, 823 T.D. Bn. (page 1 missing) …I was in the Seventh Army. I have never been with General Patton's Army, but is the only American army in Europe that I haven't been with. Understand that I am always glad to let you know what Army I am with, but I am ashamed to tell you in every letter. I am now in the Ninth Army and the 30th Division. In some of your letters you seem to want me to tell you a lot of my combat experiences and some of the horrible things I have seen in combat, but I had rather not mention such things in my letters especially the horrors and cruelties of war. Oh yes, I've seen activity on land, on water, and in the air. And I've seen plenty horrible things since I've been in combat, but so far I've been fortunate. I've never been in but one real hot battle. I don't mean to be hateful about what I've just said and I hope I haven't hurt your feelings. I'm not having it very tough now. As usual no news much so I will say so long for this time.
