Hinton, G. D. Speer, & Wm Spratling Judges of the Inferior Court of the Said State and County in open Court, Alexander Walden, a resident of Coweta County & State of Georgia, aged eighty five (85) years, who being first duly Sworn according to Law, doth, on his oath made the following declaration, in order to obtain the benefits of the act of Congress passed? June 7th 1832. That he entered the Service of the United States under the following named officers, and served as herein stated. That he was drafted for one month, and entered the service under Captain John Harrington, the first of May 1776 or 1777, and served out his tour, he resided in Spotsylvania County Virginia, when he was drafted, he was drafted to take charge of some Scotch Prisoners, that were sent to Staunton Virginia, he removed from Virginia to South Carolina and settled on the river Pee Dee, in Cheraw district, where he was again drafted for 3 months and entered the service on the 17 March 1778, and rendezvoused at Cheraw Hill, South Carolina his Captain's name was Thomas and his Colonel was named George Hicks, he was marched from Cheraw Hill to Orangeburg and from thence to the Black Swamp or Sisters Ferry and from there to Purrysburg, where we were Stationed one week as a guard, were marched back again to Black Swamp, and having been transferred from Col Hicks regiment to Col Simmons regiment, we were marched to Charleston, where I served out my tour of three months and was discharged and returned home, and on the first of July 1778, he was again drafted for a tour of two months to march against the tories, his Captains name was T. Thomas and his Col. Name was Abel Culp and while he was in this service he was in a skirmish with the tories on Black Swamp, he served out his tour of two months and was discharged. This despondent served a reputed tour of one & two months against the tories but from old age and loss of memory cannot now recollect dates. He was in no battle except the one with the tories, served with no Continental regiments or companies, but when in Charleston and he does not now distinctly recollect the name of the Regular officer, then in command, that he has no documentary evidence, and that he knows of no person, whose testimony he can procure, who can testify to his service. He hereby relinquishes every claim whatever to a pension or annuity except the present, and declares that his name is not on the pension roll of the agency of any State. his Sworn, and Subscribed ) Alexander X Walden The date and year aforesaid ) Mark Jno. Spratling JICCC Answers to Interrogatory from the War Department To the first Interrogatory He answered he was born in Goochland County, Virginia November 15th, 1748, so his mother told him his father dying when he was a child To the second Interrogatory He answered, that he has not. To the 3rd Interrogatory He answered, that he was living in Spotsylvania County Virginia and Cheraw district South Carolina, and that he livedin Carolina since the Revolution, and Morgan County Georgia and now, Coweta County Georgia. To the 4th Interrogatory He answered, that he was drafted To the 5th Interrogatory He answers, that he does not now recollect what regular officer was in command, when he was in Charleston, nor the number of the regiment, serving with no Continental troops, but that time, he served with Lincoln and Marion, a short time, the general circumstance of the service, as such has been before related in this declaration. Ray residing in the County of Coweta and State of Georgia, hereby certify, that we are well acquainted with Alexander Walden who has Subscribed and Sworn to the above declaration, that we believe him to be 85 years of age, that he is reputed and believed, in his neighborhood where he resides, to have been a soldier of the revolution and that we concur in that opinion. Hinton, GD Speer and Wm Spratling do hereby declare it to be their opinions, after the investigation of this Matter, and after putting the Interrogatories prescribed by the war department that the aboved named applicant was a revolutionary soldier and served as he states, and that he is entitled to the full ******* on his oath, and the said Jno D Hinton, GD Spear and Wm Spratling further certifies, that it appears to them, that John G Foy who has signed the preceeding certificate, is a clergyman residing in the County and State aforesaid and that Andrew T Ray who has also signed the same is a resident in the said County and State, and is a credible person and that their statement is entitled to credit. Spratling JICCC Georgia } Coweta County } I, Richard W East, Clerk of the Inferior Court of said State and County do hereby certify, that the following contains, the original proceedings of the said court in the matter of the application of Alexander Walden for a pension, and that the said Jno D Hinton, GD Speer and Wm Spratling are judges of the Inferior Court of the County and State aforesaid and that all due faith and credit ought to be given, to their attesting as such, In testimony whereof, I have here unto set my hand and seal of office this 3rd September 1834. NOTES: My grandmother was Nellie Mable Walden ( 1880-1960 ) of DeKalb County, Alabama. She was the daughter of Joseph Alexander Walden and Lousia Lydia Whitlock. Purrysburg-One of the Original South Carolina Townships. Purrysburg was located in the present SC county of Jasper and was on the Savannah River. Black Swamp was near Purrysburg. Lincoln was most likely Major General Benjamin Lincoln who replaced Robert Howe and was in Command of the Southern Department after his appointment by the Continental Congress 26 September 1778.
