Lewis, Co.I 125th Inf. 32nd Div. was posthumously awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism in France. During the period from 9th to 11th of October 1918 he repeatedly volunteered to carry messages from the front lines across a fire swept field. Seriously wounded he delayed seeking medical aid to insure that important messages would get through. His delay in receiving medical attention resulted in his death on the field of battle. Quote from the award,"His work during these days was not only an inspiration to his comrades,but also of inestimable value in the success of the regimental attack." PFC Lewis is buried at the American Cemetery Meuse Argonne, Romagne,France. Plot G,row 41,grave 26. Lewis was a resident of Dekalb County and his name is inscribed on the War Memorial Monument at the county courthouse in Fort Payne, Alabama.
